Fitness Tip:
“Few things in life are guaranteed, but here’s one: If you routinely train in the zone between 65%-85% of your maximum heart rate, you will become fitter. Another thing, if you talk to your bike it will ride better (that one is not necessarily guaranteed). |

Hi! I'm Leslie Koepke and I teach the Young at Heart (YAH) class, although my primary job (and joy) is teaching at UW-Stout. I started teaching aerobics as a graduate student at Florida State University in the 1980's. (where we had no microphones or taped music) Then I started working, and exercise fell to the bottom of my "to do" list. A number of years ago I decided my New Year's resolution was: "I promise to exercise twice........a month!" (Don't laugh it worked!) I did it, and then increased to twice a week and am now hooked for life.
About 7 years ago I offered to teach a "muscle strength class at another Health Club which then lead to teach YAH class as well. I've worked with a personal trainer for the past 10 years in St. Paul, and do lots of dancing to help me stay balanced, flexible,...and sane! I need to stay physically active because I love to cook and eat (mostly chocolate). So exercise along with drinking lots of water helps me stay healthy. |

BodyWorks began discussing adding a "Group cycling class", I was interested. I did not have a certification to instruct, but felt it was a program that I wanted to take charge of. After being certified, I began conducting classes. In the beginning, it was a big change for members to try something new. We started with a few classes a week. Increased attendance led us to increase to four instructors and offering 11 classes peak time.
The extreme cycling class is just that. Skill levels vary from beginners to competitive racers. Age level range from teenagers to seniors. The class has allowed me to improve my technical skills as a road racer for the Overdrive Cycling Team. |
